He is a nationally recognized subject matter expert in private citizen defensive encounters, a master firearms instructor, and a court-admitted expert witness in both use of force and firearms.

Before ASP, John served 7+ years in the US Navy as a Nuclear Electronics Technician, earned a Master's degree from Phoenix Seminary, and spent 14 years as a pastor. He holds a 2nd degree black belt (13-year earned) in UMAS, has accumulated over 1,500 hours of professional firearms instruction, and has been a daily concealed carry practitioner since 2006.
